Havlicek Stole The Ball

(USA Today)
I don't have a lot tonight.

I could have gone with the NFL draft. But, yawn.

Then I saw the news break that John Havlicek has died.

Obviously, I immediately thought of the late Johnny Most, who made the famous call from Game 7 of the 1965 Eastern Conference Finals.

"Hondo" was an all-time great Celtic, whose number was retired and remained revered in Boston. The Celtics held on to win the game, 110-109.

They knocked off the Lakers in five to win the NBA title.

A legendary career.

RIP, Hondo.

First known as the college teammate of Bob Knight, at some state school in Columbus, Ohio. ;-)
Seriously, Havlicek was the 2nd option (behind Jerry Lucas) for an Ohio State team that won our school's only basketball national championship (defeating defending champ California) in 1960, then lost in the championship game the following two years to Univ. of Cincinnati (which has other meanings back here in Ohio).
The other item I remember about Havlicek is a feature article SI wrote, about 30 years ago (1989, give or take a year) about a bunch of kids who grew up near Bridgeport, Ohio (other side of the Ohio River from Wheeling). Among those kids, the Niekro brothers (Joe & Phil), the Grozas (Lou & Alex), and Havlicek.
